One Small Thing

One Small Thing was set up in 2014 in response to unacceptable levels of suicide and self-harm across women’s prisons in England. The charity’s Vision is a justice system that can recognise, understand and respond to trauma and their mission is to redesign the justice system for women and their children. They deliver trauma-informed programmes to the justice and community sectors and influence for culture change across the entire system.

In June 2023 they opened a pioneering residential community for justice involved women and their children called Hope Street (pictured), which we helped fund with a £250K capital grant. From within a healing, trauma-informed, residential environment, women and children have access to a range of specialist support. By taking a positive and compassionate approach they aim to create a blueprint for change that can be replicated across the country and achieve better outcomes for women, their children and society. More recently, as a legacy partner, Trustees awarded them a significant endowment by way of a Deed of Gift to help them fund operating costs over the next 5 years, supporting their continuing efforts and recognising that women in prison are, without question, some of the most disadvantaged people in our society.
